EPFA Nations Cup 2014 - Limerick, Ireland

EPFA Nations Cup 2014

The inaugural EPFA Nations Cup took place in Ireland in July 2014 at the University of Limerick.

The splendid facilities of the university saw hosts Ireland joined by England, France, Denmark Belgium and Switzerland for four intense days of competition battling to be crowned European Nations Cup Champions. This tournament was also a European zone qualification tournament for the next FIPFA World Cup.

The opening night on Thursday 17th in the City of Culture for 2014 saw a tremendous Opening Ceremony with a wide variety of music and dance performances and a parade of the athletes cheered on by 1,200 people in the magnificent UL Arena. Ireland sent the home crowd away happy with a 2 - 0 victory and the good start that the hosts had hoped for.

Friday 18th saw the first full day of competition with a pattern emerging by France of registering big victories against Ireland, Belgium and Denmark. England too scored a sizable number of goals against Switzerland and Denmark, before a surprising tough draw with Belgium. Having taken the lead against Denmark, Ireland could not hold out and ended up leaving two points behind as Denmark came back to equalise near the end of the game.

Saturday 19th saw the second day of the round robin fixtures with France continuing to powerfully dispense of the opposition with goal after goal. The big clash of France and England ended with a 6 - 2 victory for the French and both splitting up into semi-finals against Belgium and Ireland respectively. Ireland took another harsh lesson from France in the first semi final while England made up for the earlier group stages draw with a 5 - 1 victory to book a place in the final and another clash with arch rivals France.

One of the most intense and nail biting matches of the tournament took place in the third and fourth place play-off between Ireland and Belgium on Sunday 20th with both sides still deadlocked after extra time. Belgium emerged victorious in the end after a penalty shoot-out.

The final game of this inaugural European Nations Cup tournament saw the French team, mixed with youth and experience deliver a comprehensive victory against the English team to be crowned the champions and bring a close to a very enjoyable event that had been applauded for its organization by the delegations that had taken part and spectators that had come to watch.
